About
The Oak Island Recreation Department and The Adventure Kayak Company will be sponsoring our Annual Ride the Tide Community Float down the Davis Canal on April 18, 2026. It will consist of a 5.2 mile float from 39th Place West Boat Ramp to the Oak Island Recreation Kayak Launch (SE 31st St.)
The Davis Canal is a calm and scenic waterway and the float will take place as the tide is flowing with the paddlers. Trip difficulty is: Easy.
Rentals
Kayaks are available to rent from the Adventure Kayak Company ($30 single/$50 double) (910) 454-0607. The Oak Island Recreation Department will have kayaks available to be rented as well. Limited amount. Please check with the Adventure Kayak company first. Rental cutoff is noon Friday, April 17, 2026.

This years event will consist of a 5.2 mile float from the recreation center kayak launch to Tidal Waves Kayak Launch at SE 31st St.. The Davis Canal is a calm and scenic paddle trail with the float taking place as the tide is flowing with paddlers. Come and paddle with us!
***REGISTRATION FREES DO NOT INCLUDE KAYAK RENTAL***
Guidelines
1. USCG approved life preservers or personal flotation devices must be worn during event.
2. At 15 minutes prior to the start of the float, you should be in your boat in the staging area.
3. Follow the race course directions
4. Tandems and singles will run at the same time.
5. On the water emergencies: There will be safety personnel readily available to assist you, should the need arise. All kayakers are asked to assist a boater in need.
6. Participants are responsible for transporting their own kayaks.
7. Participants are responsible for getting their kayaks out of the water -volunteers will be standing by the assist.
8. No alcoholic beverages can be consumed while participating in the event.
9. No animals allowed in boats during this event.
10. Must be at least 13 years of age to participate. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an Adult.
11. Canoes and Kayaks only. No SUP’s.
12. Previous kayak experience recommended. Not a good idea for kayaking for the first time.
13. Participants should wear shoes that can get wet and stay on your feet (No flip flops)
14. Bring water to drink and any medication they might need during the event. (Epi Pen, Inhaler…)
