
As the number of Covid-19 cases in the area levels off, a few of the restrictions regarding the beachfront are being lifted. Social distancing policies are still in effect, requiring a minimum of 6 feet distance between beachgoers.
Effective May 8th, 2020
- Short-term rentals are allowed as of 9 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2020.
- Long-term rentals (at least one year or more) were allowed as of May 1, 2020.
- Effective at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2020, the following restrictions and prohibitions are hereby imposed:
- All beach, estuary, sound side, and inlet water accesses within the Town are open to all persons.
- All beach parking is open.
- Individuals must follow strict social distancing measures.
- Cabana restroom facility will remain closed.
- All public parking within the Town Rights-of-Way (ROW) is prohibited. Towing for non-compliant vehicles will be enforced.
- All Town parks are open except for restroom facilities and playground equipment within those parks. The Skate Park is open. The basketball, tennis and pickleball courts remain closed. All other Town recreational facilities remain closed.
- The Par 3 Golf Course is open for play; there will be no golf cart rentals and payment must be made by credit card only.
- All boat ramps are open; there is no right-of-way parking allowed.
- Floating docks at SE 9th Street, SE 19th Street and SE 31st Street (including the kayak launch) and the associated parking areas are open.
- At this time, Town government buildings and facilities remain closed, including Town Hall, the Police and Fire Departments, the Rec Center, and the Airport Road convenience site (dump).
- Please check the Town’s website, oakislandnc.com, for information on new parking decals for residents and property owners and details on how to see the livestreaming of the May 12 regular Town Council meeting.Everyone is strongly encouraged to comply with all recommendations from the Federal and State governments, the CDC and the Executive Orders issued by the Governor of the State of North Carolina, including limiting groups to no more than ten (10) people, limiting activities in public and maintaining at least six (6) feet of distance from other people.
Persons traveling to Oak Island should plan to bring their own provisions since the grocery stores and similar stores are having trouble with supplies just as they are in many other parts of the state and country. At this time, restaurants are operating on a take-out basis only.
Effective 8 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2020 (click here to read the full Declaration):
- No new short-term rentals until further notice
- Long-term rentals (minimum of one year) are allowed
- Sound side and inlet water access are still closed
- Parking in the right-of-way is still prohibited, other than in specific areas as stated below.
- All access points and beaches will be opened from 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM for individual, non-stationary exercise activities to include only walking, jogging, biking, fishing, swimming, and surfing
- Individuals participating in such exercise activities must follow strict social distancing measures.
- No exercise group shall have more than 10 people.
- Sunbathing, sitting, games and all other activities will NOT be permitted on the beaches at this time.
- All beach equipment such as towels, blankets, chairs, tents, coolers, and umbrellas will NOT be allowed on the beaches at this time. Those who engage in fishing are prohibited from bringing chairs, blankets, coolers, and towels on the beach.
- Cabana restroom facility will remain closed.
- All beach accesses are closed for parking and parking lots are closed
- The following parks and associated parking lots are open: May Moore, Yacht Drive Crab Dock,, Register Park, Veterans Park, Oak Island Drive Fishing “T”, and Bill Smith Park (including the Salty Dog Park and the kayak launch).
- The Skate Park is open, however the parking area remains closed.
- The Par 3 Golf Course is open for play; there will be no golf cart rentals and payment must be made by credit card only.
- All other Town recreational facilities remain closed;
- The boat ramp on Yacht Drive at NE 55th Street and parking lot are open; there is no right-of-way parking allowed in this area. Other boat ramps remain closed.
- Floating docks at SE 9th Street, SE 20th Street and SE 31st Street (including the kayak launch) and the associated parking areas are open.
- The public is prohibited from using all private parking lots for purposes of beach access. This includes all private business, commercial and club parking lots and parking spaces. This paragraph 3(k) does not apply to privately owned or long term leased residential driveways where property owners/residents and their legitimate lawful guests park to access the property serviced by said driveways.
Effective Friday, April 24, 2020 at 6:00 AM the following restrictions and prohibitions are hereby imposed:
a) All estuary, sound side, and inlet water accesses within the Town are closed to all persons.
b) All access points and beaches will be opened from 6:00 AM- 8:00 PM for individual, nonstationary exercise activities to include only walking, jogging and biking. • Individuals participating in such exercise activities must follow strict social distancing measures.
- No exercise group shall have more than 10 people.
- Sunbathing, sitting, fishing, games and all other activities will NOT be permitted on the beaches at this time.
- All beach equipment such as towels, blankets, chairs, tents, coolers, and umbrellas will NOT be allowed on the beaches at this time.
- Cabana restroom facility will remain closed.
c) All public parking (beach accesses, parking lots) and parking within the Town Rightsof-Way (ROW) is prohibited with the exception of Town employees, government officials and contractors.
d) All public beach parking areas remain closed.
e) All Town parks remain closed.
f) All Town recreational facilities remain closed;
g) All public parking (beach accesses, parking lots) and parking within the Town Rights-ofWay (ROW) is prohibited with the exception of Town employees, government officials and contractors parking in these areas in the course of the performance of their work. This supersedes Sec. 28-IO(a) of the Town of Oak Island’s Code of Ordinances regarding parking on public owned property. Towing for non-compliant vehicles will be enforced.
h) All public boat ramps and associated public parking areas remain closed.
i) All public kayak launches and associated public parking areas remain closed.
j) All public street end parking areas, docks, piers and public accesses and all associated public parking areas remain closed.
k) The public is prohibited from using all private parking lots for purposes of beach access. This includes all private business, commercial and club parking lots and parking spaces. This paragraph 3(k) does not apply to privately owned or long term leased residential driveways where property owners/residents and their legitimate lawful guests park to access the property serviced by said driveways.
